It’s time for another Volunteer Spotlight: Sonya Mire!

This time the spotlight lands on a board member who accurately describes herself as a behind-the-scenes person.  Sonya Mire is a beautiful woman, full of humility and heart. I had the opportunity to sit down for lunch with her Wednesday, and I would like to share her story of HOP involvement with you.

Sonya, a Tennessee native, worked in Asheville as a quality engineer before moving to Knoxville to care for her mother after a debilitating stroke in 2005, and she has been here ever since.  In 2006, Sonya volunteered for the Haitian Student Sponsorship Drive, attributing her initial involvement to her brother Dr. Dean Mire (HOP Medical Chair), saying, “his telling photographs and passionate stories of conditions in Haiti infected me with a desire to help in whatever capacity I could.”

In 2007, She was asked to be the Education Chair for the board and although not sure of what she was getting herself into, she accepted. Since then, she has traveled to Haiti twice and will return this year to take more photographs for the sponsorship drive. Her management of the sponsorship program has helped to fund the education and food for 1500 school children each year!

In the future she hopes to visit Bouli, to work more with the vocational school, to build stronger relationships in Boucan Carre, and to have volunteer partners to help her implement educational program ideas.

Thank you, Sonya, for all of your hard work. HOP has been blessed to have you.

Would you like to help Sonya with the sponsorship drive? Do you feel compelled to help in another arena? We would gladly have you! Please send an email to givehaitihope@gmail.com or comment below.

As Sonya says, “there is a ton to do!”

Round Two for School Number Two

This past month has been full of progress for the St. Michel secondary school in Boucan Carre. Members and partners went down for the ground-breaking mid-September and returned with a great report and exciting photos of the construction already underway. Since that ground-breaking, the  foundation has been built, the first floor has been poured, and walls are going up soon. Next week our Chairman Ben Johnston plans to revisit the site with our architect David Hutchins for construction oversight and I am sure they will have more updates for us. Check back soon!

Ground BREAKING News!

I am pleased to announce that the building of the new secondary school has begun!

A team just went to Haiti from 9/12-9/15 for the ground breaking and came back with a full report and some wonderful pictures that I would like to pass along to you.

Brief History:

After the HOP primary school had been built, there was an obvious need for a secondary school to continue the primary students’ education. Classes were being held in a community-owned school until the roof was irreparably damaged by the earthquake and the building was no longer safe. Nonetheless, the school continued to grow and classes have been held outside for quite sometime. The HOP did not own the old building, but the need for a suitable place became quite obvious so fundraising began for a secondary school. We were so excited when Xinergy Corp decided to come on board and make the construction of the College St Michel possible. Our architect, David Hutchins made up drawings and worked with Patrice, the Haitian engineer before signing a contract. Since this time, a storage building has been built for the dual purpose of housing construction materials and itenerant workers on site, materials have been gathered and delivered, and the ground marked for the building’s foundation.

Just two weeks ago, our group- along with Charles Kite(Xinergy representative) and Josh Ault(WATE TV reporter)- went down for the ground breaking.  After Father Duportal’s ceremony which included scripture reading, some words from our Sacred Heart Cathedral representatives and a special blessing/sprinkling of the building site: The ground breaking began!  There were 30 men from Boucan Carre, paid by HOP for their labor, who began digging the footings as soon as the ceremonies came to a close. Photos from later in the day show how hard these men have been working. Construction will hopefully be completed by May of 2012.

Now for the pictures!

Everything Adds Up

Exactly one month ago I was packing my life into my car in preparation for the move to Knoxville.  After interviewing in August,  family, friends and HOP volunteers worked hard to help make the city-jump easier. My parents gave me use of their car. Cindy and Dr. Dean Mire(the HOP Medical Chair) offered me a job at their medical office.  The HOP Ways and Means Chair, Jennifer Neil, offered her house to me while I looked for an apartment. Needless to say, I decided to come, and thanks to the contributions of many, the transition has gone remarkably smooth. It is crazy to think that just two months ago applying to this internship was only an idea.

In the first week after arriving, I found myself in the car with Jennifer as she drove us to my first board meeting. She told me about the members, their large hearts, and their work for the HOP. She warned me, saying, “Now, when you walk in and see all these Haiti people, you are going to be surprised.” She went on to tell me that the board was made up of seemingly everyday people and yet they have helped to achieve such extraordinary things.  Jennifer then said, “it’s a little inspiring, I think.” And I think she is right.

The board meeting was held in the Sacred Heart Cathedral School. I don’t know what I was expecting but I was surprised when we walked into a classroom thoroughly designed for first graders. Adults were already occupying childrens’ desks arranged in a misshapen circle. Ben Johnston the Chairman of the board was seated at a desk clearly marked for “Ashley M.,” while Dianne Durand the Financial Chair sat at the desk claimed in large letters by “Jacob.”  The meeting began and the members took turns updating eachother on parish relations, recent trips, sea containers, the PGA event, budgets and PIH correspondence. I loved listening to the important conversations and glancing up to see yellow stars taped to the wall.  How inspiring to watch such a great program be run by such humble people out of a children’s classroom.

Sometimes when I read books and articles on people who have done big things I feel more defeated than inspired. I think that I must be some sort of superhero to accomplish anything worth talking about. After attending that board meeting and listening to normal store-owners, landlords, elders, students, parents and doctors talk about their efforts for HOP, I really did feel inspired.  And I want to share that inspiration with all of you.

You and I can make a difference.  A small donation, a day spent volunteering, a blog, a quick prayer: all can seem so small.  But if everyone brings their contribution to the table (or should I say to the desk) something great can be formed in the collaboration. Furthermore, the resulting achievement can be shared.

Just like my presence here in Knoxville, the HOP is proof of the achievements possible when a community works together. Let’s keep it up!

Volunteer Spotlight: Mike O’Hearn

Mike O'Hearn at the KOC breakfast fundraiser. In the HOP everyone is a volunteer. To better appreciate our volunteers thehaitiblog will be highlighting a Good Samaritan each week. This week, I would like to recognize Mike O’Hearn for all his hard work and dedication to the Haiti Outreach Program.

Mike is a family man from Florida, soon to celebrate his 25th anniversary with his beautiful wife, Susan. He has two sons, Michael(24) and Jack(21). The family has been attending Sacred Heart Cathedral in Knoxville for the past 25 years. When not with his family, Mike is the Vice President of Sales & Marketing at VisionAid, Inc. as well as a Knight of Colombus. The Knights are a charitable organization of Catholic men dedicated to the support of their community and faith.

Mike first began helping with the HOP as a Sacred Heart Cathedral church member wanting to give support. When asked about his decision to volunteer further, Mike spoke of a community in need and the importance of compassion. “The people I knew in the program were very passionate and it multiplies: passion to passion… We have to take responsibility.”

This year the Knights Council 5207 partnered with the HOP at the News Sentinel Open and Mike O’Hearn organized a Knight’s breakfast in June to get the word out and fund raise. He also worked at the HOP tent during the event where the HOP sold pillows made by the vocational school in Boucan Carre.

In the future Mike plans to volunteer in the same capacity as always, “helping where I can.” The Knights Council 5207 plans to help with the News Sentinal Open next year and with a full year to plan they could hopefully do more to strengthen the HOP presence in the fundraiser.

HOP couldn’t run without volunteers like Mike. Thank you!

Website Update

Hello! Today I wanted to let everyone know a little bit about how the website is going to be changing over the next few months. We are planning on creating a new, more modern look for thehaitiblog.org. I will also be merging the URL address for givehaitihope.org with thehaitiblog.org, so that you will be accessing the same page, no matter which address you type into your browser.

The Look

I wanted to keep the ‘ripped’ look on the page and update it while Katie requested more pictures while keeping the existing color palette and fonts. Using that information, I’ve come up with a basic template with a photographic header for the page, followed by a slideshow that preview the latest happenings with the Haiti Outreach Program.

Below the slideshow, I will be adding this featured video from our YouTube Channel.

This video is from the Medical Benefit this summer and it really spoke to my heart about the mission and goal of the Haiti Outreach Program. It’s a video I often watch while I’m working on the website as it gives me tons of inspiration.

The Technical

There are two technical changes I did want to mention quickly. One of these changes will be the navigation menu at the top, which will be more helpful and intuitive. The other change will be the possible inclusion of Joomla for the front page, while continuing to use WordPress for the blog portion. This will give the front page, and other informative pages a strong layout and will be easier to navigate.
