Haiti Outreach Program Heads North

This past weekend was a big one for two of Haiti Outreach Program’s student volunteers. University of Tennessee students Jarett Beaudoin and Katie Riley traveled north to hear ideas from social entrepreneurs all over the country, and to see how people can help support education in Boucan Carre through fun and exciting ways.

The weekend began with the Unite for Sight 2010 Global Health and Innovation Conference at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. This conference was a meeting of the minds for over 2,000 students, teachers, professionals and innovators from all 50 states and many other countries. The conference included keynote speakers Jeffrey and Sonia Sachs; Seth Godin, founder of Squidoo.com; and Jacqueline Novogratz, founder of the Acumen Fund. In addition there were over 100 other speakers including Cate Oswald of Partners in Health and Jane Aronson, founder of Worldwide Orphans Foundation. The conference included sessions on topics ranging from maternal health care in western Africa to successful strategies for starting your own nonprofit organization.

When asked about the conference, Jarett said “the experience was inspiring. It was great to see so many people with such awesome thoughts on how to change the world come together and share those ideas.”

After the conference, our volunteers headed to New York City to represent the Haiti Outreach Program at the Sammy Davis Vintage for Haiti Sale. Sammy Davis, founder of Sammy Davis Vintage, hosted a benefit sale to sponsor one secondary school student through She’s The First. You can read more about Sammy’s process for planning the sale earlier on this blog. The sale was a huge success, and it was a great way to spread the word about the Haiti Outreach Program even further.

“The sale was so much fun! What better way to change the world than to get a bunch of friends together and have a good time?” Katie said. “It was a great event, and Sammy gave tips on how anyone can take the idea and apply it to something they love to help someone else in the world!”
